Purpose: This sketch is the third in a three-part series of Christmas drama in Reader’s Theater format. It can be used individually, or as part of the series. In any case, these
scripts seek to examine the familiar nativity narrative from a fresh perspective. By now Mary and Joseph, and a few others, understand the enormity of this situation. They’re in Jerusalem for the dedication of the firstborn male. This piece, like the other two in the sequence tries not to translate everything we now know about the story, back onto the original participants. They did not know what we know, and the resulting confusion leaks out in this portrayal. It’s a very human look at very normal people touched by a supernatural invasion into their humanity.
